In the fall we enjoy the cooler nights and shorter days, not to mention the lovely foliage as the last bits of chlorophyll fade from the leaves. One of our favorite rituals at this time of year to mark the change in seasons is to sit down with a steaming mug of beautiful organic flowering tea.
Caffeine is a way of life in modern western culture. The philosopher Terence McKenna once jokingly quipped that if caffeine were to disappear from the western diet the economy might collapse due to no one getting any work done! Here at Mountain Rose Herbs, we certainly enjoy our organic black and green teas, organic yerba mate, and even organic, fairly traded coffee. Some of us like to get creative with our caffeine intake, and guarana seed offers an excellent alternative.
It’s that time of year when the days get a bit shorter and the nights a little cooler. One of our favorite things to do at this time of year is to sip on a nice steaming cup of Earl Grey Tea.
With the nights getting a bit cooler, many of our friends and colleagues are starting to turn their attention towards growing luxurious beards for the autumn and winter seasons. Though spring is still a ways away, one of our favorite activities this time of year is to invoke the season of new growth with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Steam distilled by skilled artisans, our certified organic coriander seed essential oil has a sweet, spicy, woodsy aroma with a slightly fruity top note. Generally used as a middle note in aromatherapy blends, this oil combines well with some of our favorite essential oils, including organic cinnamon, organic ginger, organic neroli, and organic Australian sandalwood. The unique aroma of this oil is fun to play with while blending. It can support citrus notes, enhance spicy blends, and add an interesting earthy tone to other oils.

The Winter Solstice is just around the corner, and we are slowly adjusting to the mounting darkness. One of our favorite things to do this time of year is to pull up a comfy seat in front of the fire, brew a cup of our herbal tea, and curl up with a good book.

Respectfully wild-harvested on the East Coast, Solomon’s Seal is a useful astringent, demulcent, and tonic herb. It is generally made into a decoction, but Solomon’s Seal Root Powder makes an excellent poultice. Historically, indigenous cultures of North America consumed the starchy rhizomes of Solomon’s Seal as a potato-like food to make breads and soups. The young shoots are also edible, raw or boiled for an asparagus-like treat. The plant gets its name from a scar that develops on the rhizome in the Autumn, resembling the ancient seal of King Solomon.
Autumn has returned to the Willamette Valley, and this is a great time of year to get organized and prepared before the cold winds of winter start blowing in. Our White Rose Hydrosol comes to us from artisan distillers in Bulgaria who specialize in cultivating, harvesting, and extracting this delicate flower. With beautiful rosy notes that are soft and delicate, this hydrosol offers a lighter floral scent than our Rose Hydrosol and is an intriguing scent to experiment with. You can enhance the uplifting floral aroma by blending with other hydrosols like rose geranium, ylang ylang, or neroli. Adding earthy essential oils such as vetiver or oakwood will create a rich grounding floral scent. The possibilities are endless!

Our expeller pressed and refined Coconut oil is certified Non-GMO and organic, and it’s great for general moisturizing. Coconut oil is generally used as a lather-producing agent in natural soap recipes. This is a bright hydrosol with an herbaceous citrusy scent and a dry thyme-like undertone. Lemon Thyme hydrosol makes an excellent single ingredient spray, and can also be incorporated into your favorite skin care recipes. It is often used as a base for botanical perfumes and will add a fresh scent to your homemade cleaning products. This hydrosol blends well with bay laurel, calendula, and Douglas fir hydrosols.
This powerful essential oil comes from the distilled fruit of the vitex or chaste tree. Vitex is considered a balancing herb for women. In fact, it is said to support physical and emotional health during a woman’s menstrual cycle and in the transition into menopause, relieving mild mood changes, occasional cramps, water retention, and hot flashes.*

The entire cacao fruit was used and considered sacred by the Mayan, Olmec, and Aztec civilizations. A classic ingredient for chest rubs and steams, eucalyptus is an evergreen tree native to Australia that has become naturalized in California and the Mediterranean. Its leathery blue-green leaves are studded with glands containing a fragrant, volatile oil that is camphoraceous and cooling. There are many species of eucalyptus trees, but the most pleasant-smelling oil is produced by Eucalyptus globulus. Eucalyptol is the major volatile oil in eucalyptus leaf, and while eucalyptus oil boasts around 70% of this compound, it is also found in other herbs at lower concentrations of 1-5%.
With so much love for organic sprouts and microgreens in health-conscious kitchens, we thought it would be fun to create a delicious sprouting seed blend so folks can easily grow a variety at home. It turned out great, and we’ve been adding these baby greens to fresh salads, sandwiches, and smoothies for a daily nutrition boost. (more…)

We are absolutely in love with our new Tropical Guayusa tea blend! The lush notes of coconut and lemongrass have us all feeling transported to paradise.
Guayusa is the dried leaves and stems of a South American rainforest holly that’s a close botanical relative to the more well-known Yerba Mate. A tall tree native to the Upper Amazon, Guayusa has only rarely been collected by botanists and is known almost exclusively as a cultivated plant. Indigenous hunters often make an infusion of Guayusa leaves to help keep them awake and alert.

We have never met an edible mushroom we didn’t like! While we truly adore freshly picked mushrooms like chanterelles sautÂŽed in butter, wine, and garlic, there are so many wonderful ways to prepare dried mushrooms to enjoy year ‰Û÷round!
You might have noticed that we carry a variety of lavender products. There are many species of Lavandula out there, and for years we have sold both Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula x intermedia as Lavender Flowers. The differences between these two are very subtle. In general, they can be used interchangeably. However, some do prefer one over the other once you get into the fine complexities.
